Carole Verhaeghe

Singer

Singing entered Carole’s life through the polyphony of oral tradition. For more than 25 years, she has been enriching her vocal landscape by exploring musical cultures where song marks the key moments of life. Through her extensive training—ranging from the folk repertoires of the Romani, Georgian, Ukrainian, and Bulgarian peoples to the liturgical repertoires of Armenia, the Slavic world, and India—she has developed a practice and sensibility that she brings to her artistic projects. She toured Belgian stages for several years with the Ys Quartet before co-founding Les t’zigales, an all-female sextet. In theater, she worked for two years with Cie Patshiva in Brussels and sang in the production Jean de fer, written by Etienne Van der Belen and premiered at the Rencontres Théâtre jeune public in Huy. She is currently developing the Iavnana project, centered on celebratory songs, with the aim of reintegrating them into the pivotal moments of life.

She hopes to share singing beyond the confines of live performance.

She trained in African polyphony with Anita Daulne, in Romani songs with Ida Kelarova in the Czech Republic, and in archaic singing with Milaya Lodron and Catherine Braslavski.
